Description
In 1887, Matthew Holmes, Locomotive Superintendent of the North British Railway, decided to stop building goods locomotives with 17” cylinders and replace them with a larger class than the previous Drummonds. Utilising the same wheelbase and firebox as the Drummond 17” but with a new standard boiler, the first six NBR Class C locomotives were introduced in 1888 and such was their success that by 1900, 168 locomotives had been built.
673 Maude was built at Neilson & Co. in December 1891 and was rebuilt by the North British Railway in December 1915 using the new standard boiler.
Commandeered by the War Department for ROD supply train service, 673 was sent to the Western Front during November 1917, returning in June 1919 and was given the name Maude in appreciation of the locomotive's war service.

I'm so pleased Hornby decided to continue with the pre-grouping liveries, this is one I've been waiting for, I've had this loco for a few weeks now and have enjoyed adding ther detail pack. Its a small 0-6-0 with charm, I love the livery on it, it gives it quite a character, not to mention the history behind this class.
The detail on this is outstanding, everywhere you look, you'll still be discovering something new, I really hope Hornby keep the door open for North British Railway livery and other pre-grouping liveries.
Anyone who hasn't got one, I strongly insist on it, it really is a game changer, I'm seeing Hornby producing locos and liveries, that I never thought we would see.
Well done Hornby!...

Exquisite little locomotive
I've been so looking forward to this loco since it was announced just over a year ago. It arrived yesterday, and it doesn't disappoint. Beautifully detailed, and superb finish, this is probably the finest locomotive I have. The TTS sound adds a superb dimension; realistic and effective with a fine selection of whistles and ancillary sounds. I've not got the sort of layout to test it's haulage capacity, but modelling Mallaig in the 1980s, it only has to haul 3 coaches. And the real engine in 1984 nearly didn't make it - don't think this Hornby version will have any problems. A fine purchase, and again, well done Hornby.
